Richard Fung is a Toronto-based video artist and cultural critic. His tapes have been widely screened at such venues as the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Toronto International Film Festival, the British Film Institute, and the Semana de Cine Experimental in Madrid. Among many awards, Richard is the 2000 winner of the Bell Canada Award, the annual national prize for outstanding achievement in video art.
Richard’s video essays have touched on a range of subjects, particularly the intersections of diaspora, race, sexuality and identity. Orientations, produced in 1984, was the first documentary to focus on the lives and experiences of gay and lesbian Asians in North America. The family diptych, The Way to My Father’s Village (1988) and My Mother’s Place (1990), broke ground in bringing to the screen the history and presence of the Chinese in the Caribbean. The first tape examines the diasporic relationship to the Asian "homeland," half-way across the globe; the second is an exploration of colonial hierarchies of race and gender, spun from an oral history of Richard’s third-generation Chinese Trinidadian mother. Richard has also written extensively on race, sexuality and representation, and on cultural policy. His essays have been published in numerous journals and anthologies, and he is currently completing a book-length manuscript on culture and art. He is much in demand as a speaker, having lectured extensively at art and academic institutions such as the Institute of Contemporary Art in London, the Getty in Los Angeles, and the Art Institute of Chicago. At the APQ conference, Richard will be showing extracts from his work and answering questions from the audience as well as acting as discussant on a panel organised around the theme of queer Asian video. |
